Pop Culture #4

"A Walk to Remember"
"Maybe God has a bigger plan for me than I had for myself. Like this journey never ends. Like you were sent to me because I'm sick. To help me through all this. You're my angel."
-Jamie from A Walk to Remember

In the movie, Landon, a wild, young, teenage boy who has made some unfortunate decisions that have turned his world upside down, crosses paths with Jamie; the sweet, innocent, preacher's daughter.

At first, we see Jamie with her conservative lifestyle reach out to Landon when he is put into a tutoring program to help with middle school kids. However, Landon has the "too cool for you" mindset and is snarky with Jamie, giving her the cold shoulder and blowing her off every time she lends a helping hand.

Finally, after running into each other yet again through the school play, Landon accepts Jamie's offer to help and they begin meeting to practice running lines. At one point after agreeing to meet and help Landon, Jamie asks Landon to promise her one thing: Don't fall in love with me.
Easy enough, Landon thinks. Little did he know though, this quiet, compassionate, wallflower girl would soon capture his heart and have hold of it for the rest of his life.

After the school play ends, Landon discovers he wants to know Jamie more, so he asks her father for permission to take her out on casual date. Skeptically, the preacher turns Landon down. However, Landon reminds him that what he preaches every Sunday, is what Landon is asking for; grace. The chance to redeem himself, a second chance to simply just be a friend to Jamie.

As they go out on their date, Landon is the perfect gentleman and slowly, the two catch themselves falling for each other. Upon realizing this, Jamie breaks down and confides in Landon her secret:
She has leukemia.

Shocked by Landon's response, the two continue seeing each other when Landon promises he isn't going anywhere. They spend as much time as they possibly can with each other, never knowing when their time might come to an end. As the movie goes on though, Jamie suddenly starts becoming sick and rapidly getting worse.

Landon never leaves her side. Soon, the big question is popped, and the two are married in the church Jamie's parents were; just as she had always wanted to do.

Not all stories have a completely happy ending though. Shortly after getting married, Jamie passes away. It is not a morbid kind of sad though. This ending is a joyful, but sad ending. Due to Jamie, Landon's life is changed. Because of Landon though, Jamie's life is completed.

This movie, for the most part, is a wonderful depiction of how love should be. Although Landon had had a rough past, he met someone who made him want to become a better person, to strive to do better in his life, at anything and everything. He found someone that made him have the desire to commit. Also, as a devout christian girl with a strong faith, she did have boundaries when it came to her relationship with Landon, and unlike the other love movies I've discussed, this movie does give a fairly good expectation for how relationships should be.
